About Marianne

Marianne Lithwick is an immigration and refugee lawyer dedicated to helping individuals immigrate to and settle in Canada. Having worked in several front-line organizations, Marianne takes a client-centered approach to her work and is extremely attentive to detail. She regularly represents individuals before all divisions of the Immigration and Refugee Board as well as the Federal Court of Canada. She also advises individuals on all facets of immigration law including sponsorship applications, humanitarian and compassionate applications and pre-removal risk assessments.

Marianne was called to the Ontario Bar in 2015. She holds a J.D. from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law where she graduated Cum Laude and a Bachelor of Arts Honors’ Degree from McGill University with a specialization in International Development.

Prior to founding Lithwick Law, Marianne articled and worked at Community Legal Clinics in Ottawa, where she assisted low-income individuals. She advocated for tenants’ rights before the Landlord and Tenant Board and ensured individuals obtained adequate disability income before the Social Benefits Tribunal. In addition, Marianne provided pro-bono legal services to the Refugee Sponsorship Support Program to support refugee resettlement and family reunification.

During law school, Marianne received the Shirley E. Greenberg Women and the Law Fellowship and worked with WestCoast Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund to advance women’s equality through policy analysis and Charter litigation. Marianne also assisted survivors of intimate partner violence bring claims before the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board as a caseworker at the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic.

In addition to migrant rights, Marianne has also been heavily involved in public health issues. In 2009, Marianne worked at the now François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health & Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health analyzing the human rights implications of routine HIV testing in various countries. She has also previously volunteered for Toronto-based non-profits such as Fife House and the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre.

Currently Marianne is an Executive Member of the Refugee Lawyers Association of Ontario and is the Chair of the Immigration and Refugee Board Consultative Committee.
